In today’s tech-driven world, it’s hard to believe that over 1.2 billion people still don’t have access to electricity. After seeing the reality of life without electricity during a field visit to Vietnam with UNICEF, Sterling McDavid left her Wall Street job and founded the Starling Project, an organic candle company that donates proceeds to provide solar energy to those in need. By blending philanthropy with commerce, the Starling Project helps to power pipes that filter water and make it safe for drinking, provide energy to refrigerate and preserve life-saving vaccines, support the cultivation and preservation of food, and more. The candles are hand-poured in Brooklyn, but they ultimately bring light to places—and people—far beyond.
